ABOUT OUR SUPER Culinary Director, Jake Handy

A lot of guys in high school don’t really have a plan about life beyond 18 years old. Many young men end up in sports, wood and auto shop, or even theater. Jake Handy had something else in mind. He found the Prostart program at his high school introduced him to the world of culinary and restaurant training.

Starting down that career path seemed like a logical thing given the important role food has played in his family. With some health challenges to siblings, preparing food properly became an act of love they all shared. You might say food became the family love language.

With nearly a decade of professional development in the food industry, Jake has expanded the food love to new audiences. A key point in his development was preparing meals at a community where his grandmother lived. The best part of his day was seeing her and knowing he helped meet her needs on a daily basis.

When Jake came to Sunridge, he brought that love of meeting the needs of others with him. He is always happy when a resident or relative trusts him enough to bring old family recipes to try. One of his best memories was when a resident told him, “you made such a difference. This meatloaf is the closest thing to my mom’s recipe I have ever tasted.”

Jake lives for the special moments when he sees the light in resident’s eyes when the taste of food takes them back and floods them with memories of comfort and home.

ABOUT OUR Dietary Services Director, Neisha Petersen

We all have that something in us — that one thing we strive to get right. You might call your passion. For Neisha Petersen that’s providing a perfect dining experience.

Neisha has spent her professional life around the idea of serving and providing great dining experiences. She honed her craft at a variety of restaurants serving in Northern Utah, from casual to more upscale dining. But a few years ago, she needed a change.

Coming to Sunridge of Roy let Neisha see another side of serving that gave her a new deeper understanding of what great dining and connection can mean.

Being at Sunridge has given Neisha the opportunity to be more involved in the food preparation side of things. She has developed a love for making food from scratch rather than meals from a box. She really loves helping in the Sunridge kitchen and home making good old fashioned American comfort foods that include meat and potatoes.

But the best part for Neisha is serving people she knows and with whom she has developed genuine bonds. In her previous serving life, it was always a check list with strangers. Her extended family of residents at Sunridge know her name, they are happy to see her. She now sees her role as bringing joy in an extended home environment, which gives her joy.
